Karkar (कर्कर) Karkara (करकरा)/Kadkad (कड़कड़)[1][2] is a gotra of Jats[3] found in Madhya Pradesh.

Origin

This gotra started after Naga named Karkara (कर्कर). [4] Karkar was a Madraka town in district Sheikhupura, Pakistan.[5]

History

History and study of the Jats by Prof. B.S. Dhillon[8] writes about Timur's skirmishes with the Jats in Punjab recorded in Malfuzati-I-Timuri (Autobiography of Timur) and Zafarnama (of Timur) by Yazdi as under:

“I (Timur) sent a force under Tokal Bahadar, son of the Hindu Karkarra, against the Jats. This force overtook the Jats and put 200 to the sword and made the rest prisoners.”

Ram Sarup Joon [9] writes ...Bahik, Bahi, Bahin or Bahela: Bahik Jats is found both among the Hindu and Sikhs. In Pakistan there are Muslim Bahele Jats-, Bahiks are mentioned in Mahabharat also. According to "Karna Parva", chapter of the Mahabharat) King Shalya paid l/6th part of his income to the Bahiks. According to Nandlal Dey, Bahik are a sub branch of the Madraks. Arat in district Sheikhupura was their capital. Hashak, Karmabh Kalak and Karkar were their important towns. In Daurala (District Meerut, U.P.) the Bahiyan Jats have six villages.

In Mahabharata

Karkara (करकरा) seems to be sanskriized as Karaskara (कारस्कर) - who served as tributaries in the palace of Yudhishthira (II.46.21). Mentioned as people (VIII.30.45).

आवर्जिता इवाभान्ति निघ्नाश चैत्रकि कौकुराः
कारः करा लॊहजङ्घा युधिष्ठिर निवेशने (II.46.21)
कारः करान महिषकान कलिङ्गान कीकटाटवीन

Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 35 mentions names of Nagas:
